Issue 2: The Best Advice I Ever Received

When I left the barber industry for Morgan Stanley, one of my mentors pulled me aside and said something I did not expect. "Make sure you have a vice. This job is stressful and you will need a way to release the stress." I thought about it and my only release was the gym. I thought that was enough. Turns out, it wasn't. He was right, I needed a serious vice. I ended up turning to therapy. I'll tell you more about that later.

What's your release? Think about it as you read this.

You are in one of the most emotionally demanding professions in existence. Your clients sit down and by the time they stand up, they have handed you their stress; their marriage problems, their financial fears, and their grief. You take it because that is what you do. But at the end of a long Saturday, after ten to fifteen clients and a full week of other people's problems, that weight does not disappear.

It follows you home.

Most barbers handle it the only ways that feel available. They turn to their favorite vice. Some reach for a drink. Some smoke or find something else to take the edge off. Some eat. Some sleep it off, though for the ones carrying the heaviest loads, sleep does not come easily. Others simply keep working because momentum feels like the only thing holding everything together. Some go to the gym like I did. These are understandable choices, but they do not resolve the underlying problem.

By turning to an unfufilling vice, you leave a fixable problem to get worse. That's what happened to me and that's why I turned to therapy. After finding a way to release the stress I was carrying I decided I wanted to share what I learned with others.

And that's why I created the SelfSync System and why I deliver it to barbers each week. It's an easy way to brush off the stress the way you do the hair. Think about it, you sweep up the hair and sanitize your tools between clients, but you don't release the stress they left behind. Mainly, because you don't know how to yet.

The Prosperous Barber Journal was designed to do that. It costs less than a bottle (it's free) and the side effects are positive. You can use the tools I share before your first client, between cuts, or at the end of the day so you don't take the weight home. No appointment, no diagnosis, no afternoon off required. And if you want to go deeper I give you ways to do that too.

Each issue has a mental health, money, and business system inside to help you manage the stress associated with money and running your service-based business. That is what the Mental Health System inside this journal is built to give you each week. When you subscribe, be sure to also share Prosperous Barber Journal with a barber you know and respect.

Issue 12: Why Retirement Feels So Stressful for Barbers
There is a specific kind of pressure that comes with barbering. You can be fully booked and still feel behind. You can have loyal clients and still wonder what happens if your hands, back, energy, or patience need a break. You can love the craft and still feel tired from knowing that most of the money depends on you showing up again tomorrow. That is why retirement can feel so stressful for...
Issue 11: He Couldn't See It, Until He Believed It.
One of my clients thought he would never be able to retire, until we did two things. We created a vision session he could repeat every night before bed, and we opened a retirement account with one revenue stream directed straight into it. I will show you exactly how to do both in this retirement series, and it starts with this issue. In issue 10, I asked you to start talking to your clients abo...
Issue 10: Understanding Your Money Stress
"For years I thought I had one money problem, not having enough. It turns out that problem had three partners I never agreed to work with, and all of them had been running parts of my life without my permission the entire time." I'm paraphrasing, but that is what a client said to me once and I've been using his quote ever since. This week: I'll introduce you to the 5 Money-Based Emotions in th...
